Palli Mahila Unnayan Sangstha (PMUS) is a woman headed, women led and women managed local women development NGO. It was established in July 1, 2006 with the initiation of a group of educated, dedicated and devoted like-minded women social workers of Gopalgonj under the leadership of Ms. Rina Biswas, a woman activist and a woman social worker, who had been worked with CARITAS Bangladesh for several years, with an aim to promote the socio-economic, environmental and cultural status of the rural and urban poor and vulnerable people, emphasising the women, adolescent girls, disables, ethnic minorities, untouchables and the children through conscientization, organizing, uniting, capacity building, institution building, capital formation, professional skills development, economic involvement and imparting felt-need based problem solving programs by adopting modern scientific technologies and environmentally sound techniques and strategies.
PMUS believes in non-directive, bottom up, participatory and integrated development frameworks and acts as a catalyst with its beneficiaries ensuring the stakeholders active participation in all steps of the development strategies. It has been implementing its development activities permanently in 375 villages of 34 unions under 11 Upazillas of 7 districts covering 150,00,000 beneficiaries whose 95% is women, girls and children who are from very poor and hardcore poor families with the support of different donors (local, regional, national, international, foreign, bilateral, and government departments. But it is also working in other Upazillas of Brahmanbari, Rajbari, Kushtia etc. Districts covering 4 Upazilla by different project supports of the government of Bangladesh and foreign donors.
PMUS emphasises on bottom up, participatory and integrated development frame work basing target group development approach but it also implement activities following community based approaches in special cases. It mainly emphasises the fullest participation of the people in every development efforts and initiatives and also joint venture project for the people’s development.
It aspires for a society free from exploitation, deprivation, oppression, malnutrition, domination, starvation, where every individual will be able to get equal and rightful shares of the resources, human rights, social rights, social security, where justice, human dignity, democratic value will be honoured and every individual will be able to live in peace, justice and harmony.
The target people of the organisation are: the poorest of the poor sections of people, emphasises will be given to poor and vulnerable women, girls, adolescents, youths, disables, ethnic minorities, untouchables and the children, who are the victims of exploitation, deprivation, malnutrition, have no purchasing capacity, income is less than expenditure, have calorie shortage, have gender gap and discrimination, tortured, and social diseases, unemployed youths, disabled people etc. have land less than 50 decimals.
